The original title of this blog post should have been [RECAP] MAD MUSIC #12: "Singing to the Sky", but announcements have piled up one after another near the end of the show, which is why I made this post into another What's Happening? post. Besides, I also need to do a bit of recap of last weekend as well.
There's a lot to cover and a lot to write, so please, bear with me. Alright, here we go!
On the day before this entry, I wrote a full post about the once in a lifetime (?) SWISH TOUR 2018 Autumn Edition live concert event that took place yesterday (JST), October 13, 2018. Because this is more of a recap than a review, everything will all be from my personal point of view, as this would be the very first SWISH Live event that I've ever watched, even if it was on the SHOWROOM livestream app. Unless I finally have a chance to go to Japan one day, just watching a major weekend live tour like SWISH on livestream would be the closest way for me to watch MADKID, a few other groups I listen closely, and new groups I recently discovered altogether.
Sadly on my end, I've had so much wifi issues and throughout all five hours but I was able to go through each of the included acts with no problems. If this were on daytime on my side of the world, I would have been bopping my head here and there while cheering them on loudly all at once. But, I don't live alone and my parents can be light sleepers, so I decided to scream out loud in the silence. I actually recorded most of the parts of the livestream (including MADKID's act) so I can rewatch them for the recap report, but I will not upload them on YouTube for obvious reasons.
While I was watching, I was also taking some notes on the acts in order, and if I'm familiar with the songs, I would list them down also. But, for this recap, because there were a lot of groups participating in this event, I'm only focusing on MADKID and the members who were also part of the special collab groups specifically for the SWISH tour series.
Okay, let's begin!
If you are brand-new to MADKID, or just J-Pop in general, the J-Pop music scene has many different smaller live concert events that take place during the weekends throughout Japan that features many notable J-Pop groups, artists, and bands. The performing artists scheduled to perform in these series of lives all depends on the concept and availability of schedules, and these said artists range from those who are already in the J-Pop big leagues to artists who are still budding in the indies scene waiting for their chance to get signed by a major record label. One of these series of smaller live events is the SWISH TOUR.
Either way or the other, this is the best way for artists and groups, no matter what level they may be, to showcase their talents and to hype up their fans while making new fans at the same time. Because these are small-scale lives that take places in smaller venues, all of these lives are standing-only. This means that if you attend a SWISH TOUR event or another similar event, you will be standing for the entire duration of the concert. Besides, if you want to get hyped up on a high-energy event like this, why would you be sitting down? Right?
MADKID and a good number of notable names, more specifically in the R&B/Hip-Hop & Rap/Dance category, are regulars in these smaller lives. They perform with other artists within the lineup, so these small lives aren't exactly like one-man lives or full-scale dome-sized concerts. They will perform maybe around 3-4 songs, and depending on the event, there may also be some surprise collaboration acts that involve a few members from respective groups. I'll get to this one a bit later.
AXCEL STYLE doesn't really specifically write or tweet about any of the MADKID lives occurring on these dates since we cater more to the global audience. The SWISH TOUR event that's coming this weekend (Saturday, 10/13/18 JST) is simply another SWISH TOUR event, but this particular one is quite special, which is why I'm writing about this right now.
For the month of September, Lin and Hylen present a brand-new track: Palace.
... except, the single was released on all audio streaming platforms yesterday, October 5. Originally, this was supposed to be released back on September 29 (or 30?), but because of a delay , it was pushed back to the first weekend of October. I don't think the release delay will affect the monthly flow that Lin and Hylen are going through with these tracks, so in the meantime, there'll be another fresh single coming soon near the end of the month.
Palace is the second single that Lin and Hylen introduced another third collaborator. XYLOZ is an indie R&B pop duo consisting of vocalist China and producer/DJ KOHD. After listening to a few of XYLOZ's tracks on YouTube, I somewhat had an idea on how Palace was going to sound like. Their musicality would definitely be fitting for a Lin and Hylen joint, in my opinion, and the collaboration for Palace really worked well.
Lin usually would post the lyrics to his songs on his lyrics blog, but the one for Palace isn't up (yet?). Until I see the lyrics, this review would be a little shorter than my Usotsuki review. I guess you can say that I'm a bit old-fashioned when it comes to music, as distorted vocals due to autotune and other effects can make the melodic words blurred to the ears, so it's easier for me to analyze the lyrics itself just by reading them.
Anyway, on with the quick review.
The first few seconds of the song already gave you the sultry vibe to this song. In short? It's a slow jam ballad. My Japanese listening skills are still beginner level so it's quite difficult for me to make up the words just by listening. On the other hand, that's just how I am with songs in general regardless of the language. I still yet to read the written lyrics for me to understand.
Listening to China's smooth vocals gives a nice touch to the melody, plus her voice becomes seductive while she raps. It does give a compliment and an "answer" to Lin's rapping right after. But as you listen carefully, the song is more of China's song rather than Lin's, which makes this experimental in a way compared to the others. In other words, Usotsuki's LIL'B is more of a guest performer, while with Palace, Lin takes a back seat by letting China take over the main vocals.
But, I would say that this song is perfect to listen to when you're "in the mood." On the other hand, it still is a song well worth listening if you want to relax, kick back, and just enjoy the music in its pure form. My only small comment here is that it's too short 😅 and that I only got to hear Lin ONCE on the song. (No offense to China-san of course, but maybe I've gotten used to hearing a lot of Lin in all his tracks after all. 😅)
That's it for the review. I'm still waiting for the lyrics... if Lin plans on posting them. You can now purchase and download Palace in your favorite audio streaming service right here.
Till next time, Axcels and music lovers!
Come October! The period of harvests and fun begins this month!
I pretty much covered most of the upcoming events for this month from the last What's Happening? post. Below are just quick updates on more events for October that I think that would give us global fans a chance to join in the fun! 😊
... and I'll even post them with pics and video. 😊
I know I used that photo from another post, but it's just filled with so much cuteness and ❤ that I just had to post it again. 😊
We're at the last week of September, which also means, we're only three months down before the end of 2018. The autumn/fall season just kicked in yesterday (9/22) as the weather begins to cool down and the leaves turn to shades of yellow, orange, red, and brown as they fall down from their branches and scattered around the grounds. Autumn/fall season is also my favorite season of the year for the same reason why this season is also Shin's favorite.
Mark your calendars that next Tuesday JST, October 2nd, Shin will be turning 25. I'll repeat it again. Shin will be turning 25... as in the mid-20s 25.
Just right after MADKID's official debut back in January, Shin also has a fulfilling first year as a debuted major artist with a list of accomplishments so far. Here are a few to name:
(Honey Green Milk Tea... or Honey Black Milk Tea...?)
